Every Thursday, ILQ features a different Qatari startup in our ‘Startup of the Week’ segment. Qatar has some of the most creative, unique, and impactful startups in the region, and we cover them all across a variety of industries in Doha—from fashion and beauty, to food and dining, health, education, technology, and more!
This week, we'll be drooling over Fudo—the first Filipino-owned restaurant in Qatar that serves an irresistible fusion of Japanese and Korean food!
Strategically located in Hiteen Street, Al Muntazah, Fudo started as an online business back in 2014 until it became a hit and now has grown to a full-pledged Asian restaurant which is reasonably rated 100 QR for two people on Zomato.
Its founders, couple April and Marvin Valdez, said that it's quite common to hear Filipinos opening their own food and beverage businesses abroad, but most of them usually resort to the conventional—Filipino food. They wanted to break this standard misconception, thus the birth of Fudo—which directly translates to 'food' in Nihongo.
"From selling four sushi flavors, we now offer more varieties of hand-rolled fresh sushi. Fudo has also expanded its menu to a more diverse selection of Asian favorites such as noodles, fried rice, salads, and spicy options."
A food blogger by the name of @amazinglifebychristine wrote: "The food that was served to us was so fresh and flavorful that you could relish the love and care that went into its preparation. The portions were plentiful, and the price per menu item was beyond reasonable. A true Asian dining experience, we will certainly be returning any time!"
Some of Fudo's bestsellers in their appetizer menu are the Crab Salad, Shrimp Dynamite, and the spicy noodle seafood called Jap Chae. When it comes to the main course, the Chicken Katsudon and Beef Yakiniku are popular.
When asked about their customers' reception, the owners are happy to say that most of Fudo's loyal guests have already been with them since they were just an online platform. "When we see familiar faces leaving the restaurant happily-filled, it just makes us want to become better at the thing that we do best."
Fudo is also available for delivery through Talabat.
