Every Thursday, ILQ features a different Qatari startup in our ‘Startup of the Week’ segment. Qatar has some of the most creative, unique, and impactful startups in the region, and we cover them all across a variety of industries in Doha—from fashion and beauty, to food and dining, health, education, technology, and more!

This week, we're featuring Subol QAi's flagship product Samam LP—an LPG device detector for homes and commercial properties in Qatar.

Founded in 2015, Subol QA is a Qatari technology startup dedicated to employing innovation and engineering methodologies to develop products that fulfill the needs of the local and global markets.

Talking to co-founder and CEO Saleh Safran, he shared that their product is a massive need in the market as around 35% of people in Qatar faces gas leakage incidents due to human error based on a research study that the Subol team has initiated.

Samam LP is a smart LPG & Natural Gas leakage sensor with shut off unit which is responsible for the detection and interaction between the product’s shut off unit and the mobile App through Wi-Fi gateway to the Cloud.

The device's aim is to keep the LPG user safe and increase their peace of mind that nothing will go wrong inside the house.

The sensor is connected to the shutoff unit through Bluetooth in order to close the shutoff unit in case of leakage and also to allow the user to close the regulator valve at any time through the app. The app also provides notification and alarm system upon any LPG leak.

"Our solution is made in a way that is controlling the gas cylinder which there is nothing similar in Qatar and we have a pending patent for it. Also, we are developing another version that will fit in the pipeline gas distribution," Saleh continued.

"We have been developing the product and expanding our team since the Qatar Business Incubation Center (QBIC) and the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QTSP) granted the business idea a funding."

While QBIC gave Subol QA free incubation for 2.5 years, QTSP on the other hand granted them the product to develop until they reach a full working prototype. Last April, they even received a Seed Funding from the Qatar Development Bank (QDB)—something which Saleh is truly proud of.

When asked about the feedback from their customers so far, Saleh has this to say: "They were surprised about the product and they're interested. We have a number of Samam reserved as early as now and many people are waiting for it to get released in the market the soonest."

He also added that people were so proud to see such product fully-designed here in Qatar. "We closed a deal with E-Commerce and also, some discussions are going on locally and globally with big potential clients for Subol."

The first 150 units of the Samam LP devices are set to be sold on January 2019.

Subol is located at Qatar Science and Technology Park's Building Tech 2, 107
