The delegation of the State of Qatar taking part in the meetings of the 40th Session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) General Assembly has submitted a working paper on airspaces closure, the dangers resulting from it and its impact on air transport, including air safety and environment.

The delegation reviewed airspace closure negative impacts, particularly with regard to the environment as the closure of some routes cause the consumption of longer flight time, which means higher fuel consumption thus generating more carbon dioxide emissions.

The State of Qatar has requested the General Assembly to remind the Member States they ought to comply with the 39th General Assembly Resolution A39-15, which “urges Member States to avoid adopting unilateral and extraterritorial measures that may affect the orderly, sustainable and harmonious development of international air transport.”

A wide group of countries has backed Qatar’s working paper, which was endorsed by the Assembly Economic Commission and for which the necessary measures have been taken.
