Qatar Airways is set to launch new services on Thursday between Doha and Durban, South Africa’s third largest city. The four-times-a-week service further complements the airline’s existing daily flights to Cape Town and double-daily flights to Johannesburg.
Travellers can now choose from a total of 21 flights a week to South Africa from Qatar Airways’ hub, Hamad International Airport.
“Qatar Airways’ new route will help meet a growing demand from passengers seeking business and leisure trips to Durban and will better serve travellers from South Africa who are seeking greater connections to the Middle East, Europe, the US, Asia Pacific and south Asia,” the airline said in a statement yesterday.
“Qatar is one of South Africa’s largest trading partners in the Middle East and we are proud to strengthen this business relationship with the launch of our new route connecting Durban directly to Doha,” said Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar al-Baker, who will travel on board the inaugural Qatar Airways Boeing 787-Dreamliner
“Durban’s prestige is recognised by the world-class events it has been chosen to host, further reinforcing the city’s strong and vibrant future as a global tourism destination,” he added.
Both Doha and Durban will host major global events in 2022. While Doha will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the XXII Commonwealth Games will be held in Durban the same year.
The new passenger service will complement Qatar Airways’ existing freighter services to Johannesburg.
The Doha-Durban schedule from Thursday is as follows (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday): QR1367 departing Doha at 7.45am and arriving in Johannesburg at 3.20pm, then departing Johannesburg at 4.20pm and arriving in Durban at 5.35pm; and QR1368 departing Durban at 6.45pm and arriving in Johannesburg at 8pm, then departing Johannesburg at 9pm and arriving in Doha at 6.20am (next day).
