Ooredoo today signed a partnership with the Qatar Cancer Society to build and support a new state-of-the-art cancer awareness centre in Doha, “The Ooredoo Cancer Awareness Centre.”

The agreement was signed by the Ooredoo CEO, Sheikh Saud Bin Nasser Al Thani, and the Head of the Qatar Cancer Society, Sheikh Dr. Khalid Bin Jabor Al-Thani at a special ceremony held at Ooredoo’s HQ1 Headquarters in West Bay, Doha.

To support the opening of the new facility, Ooredoo and the Qatar Cancer Society will work together with the help of Qatar’s Ministry of Social Affairs. The Cancer Awareness Centre will be Ooredoo’s biggest CSR project of 2014, supporting the Qatar Cancer Society not only in the construction of the Centre, but also funding for the facility for a further five years. The overall agreement is worth QR 30 Million.

In his speech, Sheikh Saud commented: “We are proud to be able to support such a vital project for Qatar. This centre will educate Qatar’s diverse population on critical information such as how to detect and prevent cancer, will aid people going through treatment, and work as a resource for support groups for patients and their families.”

Dr. Khalid Said: “We are thrilled to be guiding and managing this project with Ooredoo. Cancer is the third main cause of death in Qatar and the reason behind approximately 12 percent of total deaths in the country. This centre will be an invaluable educational resource for everyone, and part of Qatar’s multi-tier approach to reducing morbidity and mortality rates from cancer.”

Talking at the conference Dr. Khalid outlined the need for this facility in Qatar, as well as highlighting the centre’s main goals – to educate the public about cancer; prevention, protection, early detection, help available and options.

The facility will include an education room for school students and the public, support networks for patients and families of the diagnosed, and a financial help system for Qatari and expat residents who have difficulty paying for life-saving treatments such as chemo therapy.

Ooredoo is committed to building, equipping, staffing and maintaining the centre. It will invest QR10 million to build the facility and a further QR10 million to operate it, including providing latest technology for interactive education.

The company will provide a further QR2 million per year for five years to support a range of initiatives by The Ooredoo Cancer Awareness Centre to help the community.

Ooredoo sponsors and supports a host of events and programmes aimed to promote healthy living across Qatar, including building and operating the Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Centre, which supports kidney patients in Qatar.

Working towards the 2030 Qatar National Vision, Ooredoo’s main CSR goals are focused on health, education and fitness, working with the community to enrich people’s lives and raise awareness on these issues.
