Finnish stock exchange-listed KONE has been awarded a contract to install elevators, escalators and moving walkways in the Lusail Light Rail Transit system under construction in the new city of Lusail.

Lusail is being developed around 23 kilometres north of Doha at a reported cost of $45 billion, to accommodate a planned 250,000 inhabitants and 40,000 visitors.

It is part of development plans being implemented in advance of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Lusail Light Rail Transit network will comprise 10km of underground track, four main tram lines, and elevated tracks and passenger stations.

The rail network is planned in future to connect to Doha’s metro network at an interchange located on Khor highway.

Under the latest contract, KONE will install equipment for 49 elevators, 82 escalators and eight ‘autowalks’, the company said on Monday.

Mark Bayyari, KONE’s managing director for Qatar, said: “With our solid understanding of the passenger requirements in the public transport sector and our eco-efficient equipment, we look forward to ensuring a smooth and seamless transit experience for the commuters.” (Source)
