As Qatar continues to bolster national transportation projects outlined in its Vision 2030, Huawei—a global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider—is leading efforts to expand smarter transport networks across the country through a new era of integrated technology solutions. Huawei will join the Ministry of Transport and other business leaders this week to preview such systems during the 4th annual Qatar Transport Forum 2015, taking place September 14-16 in Doha, Qatar.
According to Huawei, transport is a crucial driver of economic growth and social development within Qatar and the wider Gulf region. Today’s transport systems—especially in growing urban capitals—face emerging challenges as a result of population expansion and rapid commercial growth. To address these challenges, innovative ICT solutions are now being created to support increased coordination across transport networks, improve passenger services on public systems, and to run current infrastructure more efficiently.
Based on more than twenty years’ experience in information & communication technologies research and development, Huawei will be putting forward intelligent transportation solutions for different scenarios including railway, roadway, aviation and seaport systems. Innovative technologies such as GSM-R wireless networks and Hybrid MSTP are already helping Middle East companies to place passengers at the heart of transport development by emphasizing safety and reliability as critical components of transport infrastructure.
“The government of Qatar has made clear its ambitions to ensure Qatar has a first-class domestic transport network that connects its economy and its people to the world,” said Mr. Fu Liangzhu, General Manager of Huawei Qatar, one of the speakers at this year’s Forum. “The fact is that legacy transport networks are carrying increasing requirements, while new systems such as metro and railway networks are completely Greenfield projects. A long-term investment vision is needed from day one. Communication systems that facilitate transport dispatching, video surveillance, emergency command, and daily operations are increasingly important in making transport systems operate smoothly and efficiently.”
Organizers of this year’s Qatar Transport Forum have anticipated that approximately $34.79 billion in transport projects are due to be awarded by 2018[1].
In particular, rail is increasingly seen as a backbone of national transport systems in the Gulf. Organizations like Qatar Rail have previously announced plans to develop a long distance railway that will form part of the $200 billion GCC cross-border rail network, which will help to foster sustainable growth for the region’s economy. From long-haul freight to local commuter services, the use of advanced ICT systems are automating rail infrastructure for smoother operations and management while also offering passengers desired services like mobile WiFi and multimedia connectivity.
Huawei has a wealth of experience deploying its ICT solutions for railways all around the world, including the Middle East. In the UAE, Huawei successfully deployed the mobile transmission network for the Dubai Metro Green Line, which allowed for its thousands of passengers to have access to mobile services across 18 of its metro stations. In 2012 Huawei was also chosen to work on the Etihad Rail project to provide communication network infrastructure with GSM-R and Multi-Service Networks.
