Dozens of staff at Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera have lost their jobs amid a surprise restructuring, Arabian Business has confirmed.

It is understood the terminated contracts are across the company’s English and Arabic channels and four headquarters and include broadcasters, journalists, technicians and engineers.

Filmmakers who had been with the broadcaster for decades and news anchors on the Arabic channel also were among those let go, Al Quds newspaper reported.

Staff – including those who lost their jobs – were notified via email.

Others fear more job losses will be confirmed later.

The decision reportedly follows an internal audit that found tens of excess jobs among its 3,000 employees, some staff without specific roles and an overlap in functions between its various channels.

Al Jazeera has not publicly commented the reports.

In May, it announced it had replaced the chief executive of its US network, launched in 2013, in a move that followed reports of several senior staff departures and a lawsuit claiming wrongful employment.
