The British Council and the British Embassy launch fifth British Festival in Qatar

The fifth annual Qatar British Festival has been officially launched by Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Qatar, His Excellency Ajay Sharma, with H.E. Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation- Katara, and Mrs Sam Ayton, Director British Council Qatar. The Qatar British Festival is a celebration of the long-standing relationship between Qatar and the UK.

The Festival includes cultural events, panel discussions, public activities which give audiences the opportunity to experience a series of fun, educational and creative events in culture, sports, education, business and more. Building on four successful years, the British Council is delighted to launch the fifth edition of the festival which will feature 20 live events, and even one Guinness Book of World Records artwork! HE Ajay Sharma, British Ambassador to Qatar:”I am delighted that we are bringing the Qatar British Festival back for its fifth year. This is an important demonstration of the strong ties between the UK and Qatar, and allows us to showcase our cultural partnership. I look forward to the varied events we have this year.”

H.E. Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation- Katara, expressed the keen interest of Katara to communicate and collaborate with the British Embassy in the State of Qatar to open important cultural and civilizational windows to introduce art and human creativity to different peoples celebrating the long-standing relationship between the two countries. And as a Strategic Cultural Partner, Katara also hosted part of the British Festival last year. The British Festival in Qatar aims to forge new relations and support existing partnerships in the arts, while promoting an awareness and appreciation of each country’s culture, achievements and heritage.
Sam Ayton, British Council Director: “The British Council is proud to bring the fifth British Festival to audiences in Qatar. Through this festival we aim to connect audiences in Qatar with some of the best contemporary British arts, while helping families discover the fun side of culture and learn something new. I would invite everyone to look at the programme and try something different this year.”

The Festival will continue the British Council’s longstanding work in creating opportunities for people to experience the contemporary cultural offering of the UK. Last year, the festival reached 50,000 people in Qatar, and this year it aims to reach even more by building on existing partnerships and forge new collaborations with Qatar National Library as strategic community partner, Supreme Committee for Delivery & legacy, Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Msheireb Museums, Qatar Museums, University College London Qatar, Qatar University, Qatar Financial Centre, Souq Waqif as strategic tourism partner, Institute of Civil Engineers, Qatar Stars League, Doha Film Institute, Ajyal Film Festival, Bright Bricks, Invisible Flock, and much more.
This year the Festival will include events and projects in public art, film and music, the UK alumni National Awards, sports with opportunities to explore the historical links between Qatar and the UK. A variety of talks and panels will be offered alongside the main events for all the community to attend, enjoy and experience.
