The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) has been selected by Time Magazine as one of the 100 greatest places to visit in the world! The magazine highlighted the museums immersive video screens and 3 dimensional models.
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums opened the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) to the public on 28 March 2019. NMoQ traces the history of Qatar from several million years ago to the present through its eleven permanent galleries.
The museum's unique architecture by Jean Nouvel was inspired by the 'desert rose' a naturally occurring mineral formation found in the Gulf region. The design is not just decorative but also functional because the large disks also provide natural shade allowing people to explore both internal and external spaces in comfort. This unique design feature is among the many that has enabled NMoQ to become the first museum to also receive LEED Gold certification and a four-star sustainability rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System.
