Garangao is traditionally celebrated on the 14th night of Ramadan when half of the fasting month is over. Children usually get dressed up in traditional outfits, visit homes in their neighborhood and collect goodies like sweets and nuts. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this year Qatar is embracing the traditional night of festivities in a different way through encouraging families to practice safe social distancing.

Here we have put together a list of activities that kids can participate from home. In addition to that, we have listed down some places from where you can order celebration items like Arabic sweets, goodies, and specially packed gifts to make the Garanagao colorful and find joy in this tough time

Garangao 2020: Things to do

Virtual celebration by Qatar Museums and Hamad Medical Corporation

Qatar Museums (QM) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) launched the ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ campaign, to invite families in Qatar to virtually come together and celebrate Garangao.

The aim of this initiative is to encourage families to maintain a safe social distance while celebrating in the same traditional way by sharing photos of children in Garangao dresses.

The submitted photos will be published on the Instagram page of Qatar's Museums and the Hamad Medical Corporation, to show the joy and happiness of children during the holy month of Ramadan.

Families that wish to submit their children’s photos can send it via direct message to Qatar Museums’ Instagram account (@qatar_museums).

Buses to drop by children's homes to distribute Garangao gifts

Ramadan-garangao-2020-ministry-of-culture-and-sports-qatar

The Ministry of Culture and Sports is preparing to celebrate Garangao this year in a distinct Qatari heritage atmosphere which will mix reviving heritage and fun, by running buses that will distribute packaged Garangao bags of sweets and nuts to children in their homes

Amid the precautionary measures that the Ministry is keen to follow in light of the Coronavirus outbreak, those trips will follow public safety instructions that do not cause gatherings with an attempt to export the festive atmosphere by providing buses with loudspeakers. These speakers will play the Garangao song, wishing safety, health, and joy for all, with the aim of establishing communication to spread the spirit of affection, intimacy, and love in society and encourage children to know the customs of their community.

The buses will bear the Ministry’s logo and the club and equipped with amplifiers to broadcast songs. It is difficult for the buses to cover all parts of the country but a large group of children will receive Garangao gifts.

The story behind the Garangao ceremony by Qatar Foundation

This session will be dedicated to explaining the Garangao ceremony that Qataris celebrate in the middle of Ramadan. Speakers will present the story behind the ceremony and demonstrate the traditional clothes people wear during the special day.
