Under the motto “What Qatar means to you,” and as part of Qatar National Day celebrations, Mall of Qatar organised an art competition in which 11 schools submitted multiple works showing their students’ creativity, talent and love for Qatar.

While all the entries were of exceptional quality, the one that spoke most to the judges through its relevance to the theme, visual effectiveness and originality was a creation of Doha College students Haeun Kwon, Hannah Tunstall (both in Year 12) and Ioana Alexandra Enache (Year 13).

Their piece was an exquisite mixed-media fine art painting that encompassed the different regions of Qatar, and celebrating the diversity of each region. It came ahead of the Qatar International School submission, which was a cubist image portraying the country’s vibrancy, and that of Doha British School, which highlighted a variety of Islamic traditions.

Ioana Enache, one of the artists contributing to the winning entry, explains how the team’s artwork became reality: “We wanted to incorporate different memories we have of Qatar, and did so by painting different landcscapes using varying mediums. After creating the collage, we tied the whole piece together by painting a monochrome portrait of a camel and we were all very proud of the outcome. Overall, I found it was a great way to enhance my painting skills, get to work as a team and become more confident in my work!”

“We have been amazed at the number of entries and talent that has been displayed – the judging was a difficult, but extremely enjoyable process. We would like to thank all the schools and students for their time and effort. The competition will become an annual event which gives talented students the opportunity to have their artwork publicly displayed, celebrates Qatar National Day and connects Mall of Qatar with our community,” said Stuart Elder, CEO of Mall of Qatar.

Doha College will use the generous QR 5,000 first prize offered by the Mall of Qatar towards art resources, benefiting these and other art students in the school.
