Doha Film Institute has announced on their Instagram that the Award-winning Qatari film "And Then They Burn The Sea" by filmmaker Majid Al-Remaihi has qualified for the Oscar© Consideration in the Documentary Short subject at the 95th Academy Awards©.
Majid Al-Remaihi also has become the first Qatari filmmaker to qualify for the Oscars© for this short documentary. Doha Film Institute congratulated the filmmaker in its Instagram post saying,
"It's been a fascinating journey, kicking off with our Short Documentary Filmmaking Lab, led by Oscar-nominee @RithyPanh and the support we've extended to the film via our grants programme followed by Qumra. We congratulate Majid and his entire crew for what is certainly an inspiring success story particularly for aspiring local storytellers hoping to reach a wider, international audience."
Majid Al-Remaihi also expressed his delight with the qualification on a separate Instagram post where he said,
"7 years ago, I began to feel an endless sea drive a wedge between myself and my mother as her struggle with Alzheimer’s continued to chip away at her sense of being. At nineteen, there was no specific way for me to reconcile with this continuous and incremental loss, of what it had robbed, and what it continues to rob of the futures and pasts that are suddenly irretrievable—but cinema, and this film, helped me piece together abstractions and unfinished conversations as a result of my need for gestures to mourn and heal.
This submission for the Academy Awards™ race is a milestone for myself and the many hands that went into making it."
"And They Burn The Sea" is a short documentary filmed on an abandoned fishermen's village in Northern Qatar. The film depicts the experience of familial loss and is "an ode to the filmmaker’s living mother whose memories abruptly left her during the making of the film".
