His Excellency (H.E.) Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al-Thani is Qatar's new Chief of the Amiri Diwan. He was appointed by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani for this new position on 27 October 2020 when he issued the Amiri order no. 5 of 2020. Before this appointment, H.E. Sheikh Saoud, who is a member of the ruling Al-Thani family, served the Amiri Diwan in the position of the Assistant to the Chief of the Amiri Diwan from 2019 to 2020, and has also been the Ambassador of Qatar to Germany and the Non-resident Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2017-2019). Born in Doha on 19 February 1970 (Wikipedia), H.E. Sheikh Saoud also served in the Qatar Armed Forces for almost eight years from May 1994 to December 2001. He held different military ranks in the Qatar Armed Force including Communications Manager before venturing into the field of sports after reaching the rank of Major-Engineer (He has a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the New Mexico State University, USA. H.E. Sheikh Saoud has been the Secretary-General and CEO of the Qatar Olympic Committee and under his patronage, sports has seen major developments in Qatar. He has also been the President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, Honorary Vice-President of the International Fencing Federation, Board Member of the GCC Sports Commission, Member of the IOC Sport and Environment Commission, and President of the Qatar Olympic Academy. Within sports and as part of the different sporting Committees in Qatar, H.E. Sheikh Saoud has been part of the 2004 Gulf Cup of Nations, 2005 West Asian Games, 2006 Asian Games hosted by Doha. He has also played a vital role in winning the bids for sporting events like the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m), 2015 World Men's Handball Championship, 2016 UCI Road World Championships, 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships and 2019 World Championships in Athletics. "Female participation has always been strongly encouraged in Qatari sport, and we have fully committed to supporting the universal movement in promoting women's participation in sport by establishing the Qatar Women's Sports Committee. Since its inception in 2001, programs and initiatives to promote women's participation in sports have been carefully planned and implemented, and we have noted a significant increase in the number of women that participate in these programs as well as consider sport as a professional career."
H.E. Sheikh Saoud loves sports; he plays football, football, tennis and table tennis and even has a Masters degree in Sports Management (2003) from the University of Lyon in France (The Business Year) and, in 2013, the National Sports Academy in Bulgaria awarded him an Honourary Doctorate Degree from the National Sports Academy in Bulgaria.
