His Excellency (H.E.) Hassan Al Thawadi can speak four different languages (Arabic, English, Spanish and French). He is a lawyer by profession, having obtained a graduate degree in Law from the University of Sheffield in the UK.
He has been the Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) - which is responsible for coordinating amongst public and private entities to ensure that infrastructure and development projects are delivered in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup - since March 2011.
That’s not all though. H.E. Al Thawadi is also the Chairman of the 2022 FIFA World Cup LLC, which is a joint venture between FIFA and the SC to organise and staging the world’s biggest football championship in 2020 in Qatar. In 2013, he was also appointed to be part of the FIFA’s World Cup Organising Committee, which is the committee responsible for all matters related to the FIFA World Cup) as Special Advisor.
He is also a board member of Katara Hospitality, Qatar International Islamic Bank and Msheireb Properties. In addition, he serves as the Joint Advisory Board member at Northwestern University Qatar, and Advisory Council member at Hamad bin Khalifa University (College of Humanities and Social Sciences) and Qatar University (College of Business and Economics).
Before he took on the appointment as SC’s Secretary General, H.E. Al Thawadi served as the Chief Executive Officer in Qatar’s 2022 Bid Committee, where he worked with the Bid Chairman, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, and helped win the bid to host the FIFA World Cup in the Middle East for the first time. H.E. Al Thawadi, also, previously served as General Counsel for Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and Qatar Holding, which help strengthen Qatar’s national economy and long-term strategic investments. He still maintains a the role of Legal Advisor to the CEO at QIA.
