Her Excellency (H.E.) Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari is one of Qatar's most prominent faces in the country's healthcare system and is guided by three overall goals: better health, better care, and better value. Under her leadership, the Ministry of Public Health has thrived and her dedication to her goals has helped improve health and healthcare in Qatar in a sustainable way. Her continuous efforts enabled Qatar to become the 5th best country in the world in 2019 for health, as ranked by the UK's Legatum Institute, a London-based think tank.
She is at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Qatar, and has played an integral control in preventing the disease from taking over Qatar because of her strategic thinking and dedicated team.
H.E. Dr. Hanan has been the Minister of Public Health for Qatar since 2016. Her responsibilities in the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) include:
After completing a Master’s degree in Healthcare Management, she obtained a PhD in Healthcare Management from Brunel University in the UK in 2002.
H.E. Dr. Hanan worked at the World Health Organisation (WHO), Reuters and as a freelance health reporter, before joining HMC’s Women’s Hospital in 1996 and rose through the ranks to become Managing Director in 2007, a position she holds even today. She has been credited with transforming the HMC into an integrated academic health system that has won numerous awards and achieved many international accreditations. It is her dedication, her commitment and her outstanding work in the medical field that have gained her the prestigious title of the Minister of Public Health, a position that has taken the level of healthcare in Qatar up a level.
Dr. Hanan is the Chairperson of the Qatar Biobank Board of Directors as well as the Academic Health System International Advisory Board, the Hamad Healthcare Quality Institute International Advisory Board and a number of other committees at the MoPH.
She is a Co-Chair for the Joint Advisory Board of Weill Cornell Medicine and Vice-Chair for the Board of the Qatar Precision Medicine Institute.
She is also a member of the Sidra Board of Governors, the Board of Directors of Qatar Foundation for Social Work, the Qatar University Board of Regents and the Qatar Foundation’s Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council.
In October 2018, Her Excellency was elected as an international member of the United States’ National Academy of Medicine (NAM).
H.E. Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari is a visiting professor at Imperial College London. She is also an accomplished speaker and thought leader in the healthcare industry in the region.
