Are you an art lover? Qatar's art scene is ever-expanding with the numerous exhibitions, art shows and events taking place in the country throughout the year.
One such exhibition is 'Yayoi Kusama My Soul Blooms Forever'! Kusama is a contemporary Japanese artist whose work includes paintings, sculptures, performances, videos, installations and more. The artist and Louis Vuitton recently rejoined for a second collaboration after ten years - you may have seen polka-dotted LV bags and clothing as part of this collab.
The exhibition in Qatar features some of the artist's large-scale artworks that have never been shown in the region. They are scattered around the Museum of Islamic Art Park or MIA Park. The ILoveQatar.net (ILQ) team tells you what you can do while you're there! Let's go!
Polka dots are a common theme that one can come across in Kusama's artworks. This particular artwork, called Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees (2002/2022) installation, showcases a series of palm trees wrapped in polka dots at the park. Walk along the path lined by these trees on both sides, this is also a great way to spend the breezy evenings in Qatar.
A number of installations are placed in different areas of the park. Have fun checking them out!
Follow the maps placed there and enjoy walking around the area to spot them. Below are some of the installations you can check out.
Dancing Pumpkin (2020) - this represents a new format for the artist, with bronze tentacle-like structures spread more than 16 feet from the centre, giving the impression of being in motion. This work hasn't been featured in the region yet - so make sure to check it!
My Soul Blooms Forever (2019) - comprising five brightly coloured flowers. You have to walk up the hill at the farther end of the park to see it.
I Want to Fly to the Universe (2020) - a dancing sun-like structure that hasn't been seen in the region yet.
The Infinity Mirrored Room – Dancing Lights that Flew Up to the Universe (2019) is one of the highlights of this exhibition. It features an enclosed room covered with mirrors on all sides, and hundreds of LED lights light up the room, giving it an illusion of infinite lights lighting up at the same time.
This is an enjoyable experience for the whole family, and we are sure kids will love it too! It's a ticketed event.
Note: If you are uncomfortable with flashing lights and/or closed, dark spaces, please avoid this experience.
If you're in the mood to buy souvenirs to take back, do check out the Gift Shop after you've visited the Infinity Mirrored Room and buy some goodies like keychains, pencils, collectables etc.
