Saving money in any country is not easy especially if you don't make it a priority. With the rising costs of living every year, we need to stop living paycheck to paycheck and make sure that we have savings to fall back on. Creating a budget is important as well as living within your means to help you keep track of your spending and achieve your savings goal.

1. Shop when there's SALE

If you have the budget, you can save money by taking advantage of the different promotions, deals, and discounts in malls, supermarkets, and other shops. There's almost always a SALE running in shops in Qatar and the most popular time of year for them is during Ramadan and Eid. Wait for the appliance, gadget, clothes, bag, or shoes you want to go on sale before you buy so that you can save.

2. Buy used or secondhand

If you're not picky and fine with using secondhand items, you can opt to purchase secondhand furniture, appliances, or even a car. Expats who are moving houses or leaving Qatar for good usually put up for sale the items they cannot take with them and post them on various Facebook groups.

You can also buy secondhand items from a website like Lzhiba or Souqti (for luxury items).

When looking for a place to rent, look for properties or real estate brokers that offer an all-in package, which means the utilities like internet fee and Kahramaa are already included in your monthly rent. Real estate developers also run offers to entice renters. A lot of them have offers like 45 days free or 2 months free plus other add-ons when you book an apartment with them. Others give out 30 days free plus free utilities. Do negotiate!

Whenever you can, use public forms of transportation such as the Doha Metro or Mowasalat Buses to get to your destination instead of taking a taxi. Doha Metro also provides free Metroexpress and Metrolink to select destinations. If it's within walking distance, you can also opt to walk instead. Some people also choose to use bicycles to get to their destination.

5. Online promotions, deals, and discounts

There are also a lot of Buy One Get One apps in Qatar in which you can get a free meal, service, or activity. If you buy groceries frequently, you can also get savings or cashback by making use of loyalty and reward programs in Qatar. There are also discount websites like QGrabs and Doha Treats where you can find vouchers and deals for things such as products, classes, and more.

You can also download your bank's mobile app and check the offers they have. For example, the Commercial Bank of Qatar has talabat deals, travel offers, dining offers, shopping offers, entertainment offers, staycation offers, and more.
