Qatar National Library (QNL) is much-loved for being a reader's haven, a space for productivity and quiet time.
Qatar National Library is an establishment dedicated to developing and contributing to society by creating a comprehensive space for learning and discovery. One of the many ways it is doing so is by being an institute that considers accessibility and provisioning for those with disabilities at different levels.
The ILoveQatar.net (ILQ) team is here with a guide to the various facilities and features that QNL offers.
The infrastructure of the Qatar National Library is constructed to provide those with disabilities with a smooth and seamless experience.
Ramps and tactile paving have been placed to ensure that from parking to the entrance, the route to the Assistive Technology Center is easy.
The library boasts a collection of e-books, audiobooks, music & videos. The main book collection also consists of large print books and braille books.
QNL also facilitates the creation and use of 'BookShare' accounts which is a digital library that makes reading easier for those with reading impairments. Some features include listening to a book, following highlighted text, reading in braille and many other options.
The Assistive Technology Center (ATC) is a hub within the library dedicated to catering to the needs of those with disabilities.
Specialized computers, adjustable workstations, scanning pens with headphones, ergonomic keyboards, braille keyboards, and portable electronic magnifiers are just some of the many devices the centre provides.
Aside from being a dedicated space, the ATC also offers the option of in-library borrowing, wherein people with disabilities may borrow any of the devices to be used out of the ATC but within the library.
Note: Devices can be borrowed using the Assistive Technology Device/ Equipment Loan Form.
The 'Accommodation Request' form can be submitted before the library visit, enabling those with disabilities to request specific sessions and facilities.
While the 'Accommodation Request' can be submitted via the website, it can be submitted via email through the 'Contact Us' page or even upon arrival at the information desk.
Qatar National Library also has a sensory room that caters to children with special needs up to 14 years old. The controlled environment supports children with difficulty learning, developmental disabilities or sensory impairments.
Children using the sensory room will need to be accompanied by parents.
