It’s that time of the year again. The spring break is coming up in Qatar for many schools and that means it’s time to plan your holiday. By planning your holiday, I don’t mean booking just your hotel stay and your travel tickets. I mean planning your holiday with the hyperactive, super fidgety kids of today who need to be kept occupied all the time or they just won’t sit still.

life hacks in Qatar: travelling with kids

Take a look at the following life hacks to make your holiday as easy as possible with those kids!

1. Be calm and patient

Pack up and take your patience with you; if you show any signs of agitation, your kids will pick it up and may also do the same.

2. Involve the kids

Keep them involved in the planning stage of the holiday to get them excited and ask them to help you with the packing. This will keep them more interested.

3. Try to pack light

It sure won’t be easy to juggle a large number of bags and suitcases along with your energetic kids, so try to pack lightly and sensibly.

4. Keep toys and activities handy

Make sure you keep a supply of books, toys and activities ready for your kids so that when they start becoming irritable or feel bored, they will have something to keep them busy. Don’t forget to pack a surprise for them; it could be a new book or toy, or one they haven’t used for a while, or a new game or activity that will keep them busy they really start getting fidgety. You may also want to keep a tablet handy for when they get bored with other activities or they can use the plane monitor to watch movies or play games.

5. Keep plenty of snacks

Kids tend to become hungry easily and keeping snacks and water handy will keep their hunger satiated, especially on a long journey.

6. Keep something chewy to eat for takeoff and landing

Sometimes, the change in the air pressure can hurt your ears and it may be hard for kids to bear that pain. To ease the pain and the pressure on their ears, keep something they can chew on like some sugar-free gum, gummy bears or chewy sweets during take off and especially when the plane starts to descend towards landing at your destination. For babies and toddlers, it’s best to give them water or milk from their bottle.

7. Don’t forget to keep some extra bags with you

Your kids may feel motion sickness (I know mine does) or feel nauseous while on the plane, so it’s best to keep some extra bags on you incase there is a need to vomit. Not a comfortable thought, but it can happen!

8. Make sure you and the kids are dressed for comfy

It helps to dress your kids in clothes that are loose, airy and comfy, so they can be at ease on the flight and move about freely, especially if it’s a long one.

9. Pack extra clothes for the journey

Keep some extra clothing for your kids as travelling may make kids behave in a way they may not normally. This way if there are any accidents with food, travel sickness or wetting their pants, you will be fully prepared. Also, keep some extra layers in case the kids feel cold.

10. Stash any medications and first aid items that your kid may need

It’s always best to keep any regular medication your kid is taking with you so you don’t have to skip medicine times. Always keep a pain medication on hand, just in case, one of your kid's gets a fever or suffers from any aches and pains along the way. Packing first aid items like bandaids, ointments to relieve pain from cuts or insect bites, etc.

11. Baby/wet wipes are a lifesaver!

Even if your kids are older, always travel with baby wipes. They come in especially handy when the seat belt sign is turned on and you have to clean your kids' dirty hands, they spill something on their clothes or on the seat. They are also great as a refreshing face wipe for your kids and yourself.

12. Stock up on diapers and other must need items

If you have a baby or a toddler, make sure you pack extra diapers and bibs, extra clothes, and extra bottles and extra milk powder (if not breastfeeding). You never know what you need on the way so it’s best to be prepared.
