Seeing the Great Mosque of Damascus Through Eighth-Century Eyes with Prof. Alain George
23 January 2019, 6:00pm
In 715, after a decade of work, a new Umayyad monument was revealed to the world: the Great Mosque of Damascus. Its vast architectural spaces clad with mosaic landscapes, marble, and other precious materials were immediately perceived as a wonder to behold. In this lecture, we will explore the aesthetic values that underscored the conception and reception of this astounding programme.
MIA is delighted to welcome Professor Alain George, I.M.Pei Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the University of Oxford. Professor George has published widely in early Islamic Art and Architecture, early Qur’ans and Islamic calligraphy. His current projects focus on the Great Mosque of Damascus and the Manuscripts of the Qur’an and Devotional Books.
