Visitors to Souq Waqif last night were treated to a variety of cultural performances from both Korean and Arabic musicians and dancers, who were performing as part of the Korea-Arab Friendship Express Caravan.

Champion breakdancers, Myi Sung or B-Boys, and traditional musicians Samulnori are visiting from Korea, and will be performing in 11 countries throughout the Arab world.

A spokesperson for the Korean embassy, which has been involved in the cultural exchange said: “The reason they have come here is to expand mutual understanding of each other’s cultures for the people from both nations.”

He explained that the exchange reprVisitors to Souq Waqif last night were treated to a variety of cultural performances from both Korean and Arabic musicians and dancers, who were performing as part of the Korea-Arab Friendship Express Caravan.esents the first major programme organised by the Korea-Arab society, which is based in Seoul. “This is why the society was launched and we are very pleased that Qatar is the first place the travelling performers have visited on this trip,” he added.

The evening started off with a routine by some beat boy dancers based in Qatar, before the Samulnori drummers took to the stage. Their lively movement in traditional costume created an elaborate and beautiful scene, and the gathering of spectators sounded their appreciation.

This was followed by the B-Boys, which for many was the highlight of the evening. Despite a slight technical hitch at the opening, the dancing troupe mesmerised the crowd with some unbelievable moves and imaginative routines. They managed to combine traditional Korean music with modern breakdancing, and put together some truly original choreography.
The climax of their performance involved all the dancers and drummers performing together, with a number of solo freestyle routines which were greeted with enthusiastic applause.

After the Korean and Arab beat boy dancers, there was a performance of traditional Arabic music, which was also enjoyed by a large crowd.

One onlooker said that she had thoroughly enjoyed the evening. “It is great to get the chance to see such a talented group of people, and also learn something about their music and culture. And I always enjoy seeing live Arabic music. “
“This is the kind of thing I would love to see more of going on in Qatar – long may it continue!” she added.
Another performance will be held at the Diplomatic Club tonight.
