PASSANT
Passant Refaat is the world’s first female Egyptian DJ. In fact, this extraordinary young woman not only pioneered the art of djing in her native Egypt but her dynamic career has since made her one of the most popular female DJ artists in the Arab world. With Passant, nomen est omen: her name takes its origins from ancient Egyptian and means “goddess of joy and fun.” But while her professed mission is to share and spread this divine joy and fun with clubbers all over the world through her music, she also knows that hard work and dedication are the fundaments of professional success. Passant is an artist that pursues and plies her métier with boundless energy and passion. Her music represents a carefully studied fusion of vocal-based commercial, electro, funky, progressive, club, and tech-house flavors and varieties. It is this mixture of professionalism and passion that goes into the creation of the world of glitter and joy familiar to anybody who has experienced one of Passant’s performances.
DJ Passant launched her career at the age of 15 after returning to Egypt from Budapest, Hungary. She attributes much of her development to her elder brother, Taarek, who introduced her to the world of djing and mentored her in the art of mixing. Her first appearance was in 2003 at the German University in Cairo. She then performed with a well-known band at Cairo’s Marriott Hotel, which created a sensation and launched the establishment of a dedicated fan base. Passant was offered a residency at the Zerzara Club in the JW Marriott, at the HardRock Cafe in the Grand Hyatt, and at the SkyBar in Malaysia. She has been the only female Egyptian DJ to make guest appearances in the Little Buddha Hurghada, the Sharm al-Sheikh, the Sangria, the Latex, the Place Boat and the Bellisimo just to name a few venues. Passant’s media appearances include interviews on leading entertainment television channels such as OTV, Rotana Music, and SadaElBalad. Her mixes have also been played on Cairo's number one hit music station, Nile FM. As Egypt’s youngest female DJ, Passant became a representative of SUNSILK products in late 2008 with advertising billboards featuring her image throughout Cairo and Alexandria. Her television commercials were also broadcast on Melody TV and Mazzika Channel.
Passant has been taking the Gulf by storm since 2011 with her music igniting interest and fan-followings across the region --- no easy feat in an Arab cultural setting where djing is still very much a male dominated profession. She has performed at the best night spots, including a monthly residency at the Pearl Club in the Marriott Hotel in Doha, Qatar. The “Egyptian Princess” image embodied and promoted by Passant has caught the interest of international clubs and she has since been booked for world tours in Asia, Europe, and the Gulf. Whenever you hear passionate, ecstatic music, you will find Passant. She managed the sound engineering at several major sports events, including the 2012/2013 Olympic Games Program at the Aspire Dome, and at the Samsung Diamond League of Athletics in Doha, Qatar. She has also developed a real passion for producing with Ableton Live. In 2013, Passant released her first single under the name “Jump in the Club.”
Passant knows what touches people. Golden musical notes run through her mind while audio waves and midi notes beckon her to create music. Passant once stated that it was the “fabulous feeling” music gave her that hooked her on djing. And she’s been hooked ever since.
