Featuring exuberant choreography, memorable songs and inspired performances, this musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic ‘Oliver Twist’ tells of the adventures of young Oliver, who escapes an orphanage and takes up with a group of pickpocketing street urchins in the mean streets of 19th-century London. Winner of 5 Academy Awards, this film is a true gem.

Director Carol Reed first came to prominence with ‘The Stars Look Down’ (1939) and ‘Night Train to Munich’ (1940), but it was in the immediate postwar period that he made his most highly regarded work. ‘Odd Man Out’ (1947) and ‘The Fallen Idol’ (1948) preceded his masterpiece, ‘The Third Man’ (1949), which took the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival that year. His ‘Outcast of the Islands’ (1952) – today a well-regarded part of his body of work – marked a downturn in his creative success, which would be revived with the musical ‘Oliver!’ (1968), for which Reed won the Academy Award for Best Director.
