Hundreds of visitors thronged the opening of the first ever ‘Made In Turkey’ exhibition yesterday at the Doha Exhibition Centre where a total of 204 companies are showcasing their best products.

The Minister of State for International Cooperation and Acting Minister of Business and Trade, H E Khaled bin Mohamed Al Attiyah, officially cut the ribbon along with Nihat Ergun, Turkish Minister of Industry and Trade and other Qatari and Turkish officials, marking the opening of the exhibition.

A Turkish dance troupe welcomed the guests and VIPs adding more vivacity and excitement to the event. The opening was star studded as celebrities from the hit TV show Noor which include Songül Öden (Noor), Kivanç Tatlituð (Muhannad) and Tuba Buyukustun (Lamees) meet their fans.

The four-day expo is expected to see 13,000 visitors flock the 10,000sqm exhibition space where Turkey’s best are displayed.

A highlight of the exhibition is a gigantic double-knotted hand woven silk carpet. Measuring 86sqm and weighing 400kg, the carpet prides itself as the biggest in the world. It took 14 weavers four years to weave the carpet which contains 46 million knots.

The exhibition offers a diverse range of products such as marble, ready-to-wear clothes and accessories, handmade silk carpets, natural and healthy food and cosmetic products, textiles, lighting fixtures, water treatment system, household appliances, agricultural machineries and processing systems, jewellery and decorative products, and construction equipment and accessories, among others.

Lauding the cordial economic relation between Qatar and Turkey, which has improved significantly with foreign trade volume reaching $1.2bn at the end of 2008, Turkish Industry and Trade Minister Ergun was optimistic on the ongoing expo.

“I sincerely believe that this exhibition shall contribute to the development of bilateral economic relations, opening the gate to cooperation in many sectors,” said Ergun in his message.

Dr Murat Yalcintas, President of Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, on the other hand expressed positive outlook that through the exhibition, the power of Turkish production and technology would be further recognised in Qatar.

He said the exhibition would serve two purposes namely boosting the range of trade between the two countries and for Turkish contractors to meet the infrastructure and urban superstructure needs of Qatar in a swift manner.
