Join Yto Barrada in conversation with exhibition curator Laura Barlow for a discussion about these threads of thinking and the presence of the parallel but distinct lives of beings in the exhibition, including Mounira Bouzid, Barrada’s mother; the ethnologist and anthropologist Thérèse Rivière; the Lebanese modernist Saloua Raouda Choucair; a palm tree; and a dinosaur skeleton. These characters are all part of Barrada’s imagined and historical socio-political narratives that address ideas of decomposition and revival related to the histories of political and colonial nation building, post-independence strategies of resistance and their distinct formal realities.
This public event marks the close of Barrada’s solo exhibition at Mathaf, My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nougat at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar from 2 August – 30 November 2020, and celebrates the publication of the exhibition catalogue, both curated and edited by Laura Barlow.
The event will be held in English and simultaneous Arabic translation will be provided.
