VIRGINIA Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQ) is presenting from today an exhibition, ‘Faces and Letters: Through the Eyes of Collectors in Doha.’
The exhibition is open to the public.
It focuses on works of art created by contemporary artists living or rooted in the Middle East. They have been chosen from the private collections of four Doha-based collectors who have come together to promote Middle Eastern art.
The collectors – Tariq Jaidah, Abdulla bin Ali al-Thani, Osama Abu Sitta and Jochen Sokoly – have been actively involved in promoting contemporary art by Middle Eastern artists in and outside of Qatar showcasing their collections at similar exhibitions and playing an effective role in the arts scene in the region.
The works that they have chosen from their collections for the exhibition are by artists from diverse nationalities resident in the Middle East or the diaspora (such as Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Iran, Egypt), age groups and renown.
The artists include Dia Azzawi, Adonis, Mohamed Omar Khalil, Tagreed Dargouth, Adel El-Siwi, Omran Younes, Mona Hatoum, Ala Ebtekar, Arwa Abouon, Yousef Nabil, Hamza Bounoua, Mutazz, and Sadegh Tirafkan.
The title of the exhibition - Faces and Letters - not only refers to the two subjects that feature strongly in the choice of works, but also reflects the interest and aesthetic drive of the collectors, as well as of some of the artists. The exhibition will run until March 7 at the Gallery in VCUQatar.
