THE Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will present a concert on Wednesday, February 18, at the Aspire Hall in the Aspire Complex Ladies’ club at 7.30pm.

The programme will be directed by Andreas S Weiser, and will include a number of vocal and instrumental operatic excerpts, explained a spokesperson, who added that the soloists will be Sir Willard White and Sabina Cvilak.

She explained that the orchestra will be playing excerpts from Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ and ‘Dona Giovanni’ as well as from Schmidt’s opera Notre Dame, which depicts the story of Victor Hugo’s ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ Quasimodo and his love for the gypsy Esmeralda.

The concert will also feature music from operas about the legend of Goethe’s literary creation, the tormented philosopher Faust, composed by Charles Counod and Hector Berlioz.

These will be followed by compositions written by Rossini, Puccini, Mascagni and Verdi – all legendary composers of Italian opera music.

The concert will close with a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s overture to his operetta “Candide,” about which the spokesperson said: “Although “Candide” never achieved the mainstream popularity of ‘West Side Story,’ it has earned a part in the orchestral repertoire with its full symphony orchestra version, incorporating famous tunes and odd time signatures and rhythms that never fail to cast a spell on the audience.”

Tickets for the concert can be obtained from the Virgin Megastore at Villaggio and are priced at QR200 and QR75.
