The stage musical production of Mira Nair’s successful 2001 Indian comedy-drama Monsoon Wedding will premiere in Doha on 15 November at Abdul Azizi Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif. The musical will be presented by Qatar Creates Events and the Qatar-MENASA 2022 Year of Culture and is part of Qatar Creates’ lively cultural programme for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and beyond.
Award-winning film director Mira Nair brings her iconic, exuberant, sumptuous film Monsoon Wedding to life in a new musical adaptation set to light up the stage this fall.
East and West converge at the four-day wedding celebration of Delhi-born Aditi and New Jersey-raised Hemant. A south Delhi princess, Aditi has agreed to marry on the rebound from a disastrous affair, but her activist cousin Ria urges her to think beyond marriage. Hemant, the Ivy-league groom from New Jersey, has never felt at home in his own skin and is hoping to find an anchor with his new wife’s family.
Conceived by a top team of collaborators, Monsoon Wedding Musical features a stellar Indian cast that took five years to assemble, supported by Indian composer Vishal Bhardwaj’s musical compositions, along with three hit songs from the film by Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna, and orchestration from the Tony Award-winning orchestrator of ‘The Band’s Visit’, Jamshied Sharifi.
