Korean Festival in Qatar

A number of activities have been line up for October to promote Korean culture in Qatar. They include film screenings, sports competitions and food festivals.

Speaking to reporters, Ki-seog Lee, counsellor (political affairs) at the Korean embassy, said the first event on the agenda would take place on October 1, with the launch of the Third Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Cup at the Aspire Zone.

A Korean food festival is to be organised at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on October 11. A Korean cooking class for ladies will follow on October 12, at the ambassador’s residence.

A Korean film festival will be held at Qatar University’s Khaldoun Hall from October 12-17, except on Friday.
Ki-seog said that taekwondo was a Korean “spiritual and physical martial art” which is practised by around 40mn players around the world.

“This number is an explicit proof for the unprecedented achievement of this sport in terms of bridging gaps between nations and conveying the Korean culture to the world,” he said, adding “it is time to bring this cultural interface tool to Doha”.

He explained that Qatari practitioners who have been taking taekwondo training courses at Qatari sports clubs would be contesting for the 3rd Korean Ambassador’s Cup at the Aspire Zone’s multisports hall.

“A total of 64 men and women will compete in the qualifying matches on October 1 at 2pm to reach the finals expected to be played at 5pm of the same day,” he added.

The food festival, which will begin at 7pm on October 11, is to mark the Korean National Day.

“A total of six Korean food specialists from Sookmyung Woman’s University in Korea will be flown in to Doha to introduce various kinds of Korean food,” he said, adding “this event will serve as a bridge to introduce the Korean cuisine to both Qatari nationals and the expats living in Qatar”.

Ki-seog said Korean food specialists would conduct a cooking class for women on October 12, from 11 am to 2 pm.
“The class, which will be held at the Korean ambassador’s residence, will exhibit typical and popular Korean food”.

Highlighting the film festival, which will be held in co-operation with Qatar University, the diplomat said films to be screened include would be My Friend Is An Agent on October 12 at 2:30pm, Scandal Makers on October 13 at 2:30pm, Le Grand Chef on October 14 at 2:30pm, Old Partner on October 16 at 5pm and Forever the Moment on October 17 at 2:30 pm.
