The Third Line Doha launched its first Arab film series yesterday with screening of the French language film Le Grand Voyage. Directed by Ismael Ferroukhi, Le Grand Voyage is a French-Moroccan co-production and winner of the Venice Film Festival. It tells the story of a father and son and their journey back to the sources of Islam. It is a tale of generation cultural divide and clashing identities.

The father demands that his son drives him from their home in France to Makkah for the Haj pilgrimage, via Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia – tensions soon become apparent. The father insists on the respect that his faith deserves, while his son wishes he were back home with his new girlfriend. Channels of communication between the Moroccan father and French-born son are blocked – not only do they not speak the same language but neither speaks the language of those they meet on the road trip.

The series features a film every Saturday, inviting diverse audiences interested in the artistic as well as the social and political aspects of life in the Middle East, with a focus on dialogue. All films have been carefully selected to fairly represent not only their respective regions, but also specific issues such as identity and autonomy, which challenge homogenous perspectives. This series has the thematic subtitle of ‘struggle’, and aims to simultaneously entertain and inspire, aided by post-screening forums and guest speakers.
