Sometimes we just crave comfort food. And what more can be said about the ubiquitous sandwich? Call it what you will – sammie, sarnie, buttie, hoagie, foot-long, toastie, there’s something fundamentally filling about layering your favourite stuffings between two slices of bread.
For Qatar’s foodie faithful, Doha boasts some top-notch eateries catering to the mighty sandwich. This is by no means a complete or exhaustive list, but here’s a few of our top picks we think you should try!

We can’t get enough of this deli-style eatery located at The Pearl-Qatar’s bustling Medina Centrale. So, which wich ya want? Take your pick! Sidle up to their menu bar, grab an order sheet, and start building your most superior sandwich! This gem of a restaurant earns top marks for range and variety of toppings and fillings, quality and freshness. Our must-try is the Crab Salad Skinny-Wich (they hollow out the bread for less of a carb hit) with spinach, red onion, avocado, peppers, and a good dollop of their spicy mayo! Orders are pinned up over the production line, laundry-style, and service is fast, friendly and the sandwiches quality. On the pricier side expect a 10.5-inch sandwich to set you back about QR 50.

This hidden gem of a Doha food find sometimes tends to get overlooked by its neighbour just down the road – Ric’s Kountry Kitchen. We say all the better for those of us who have already discovered this deliciously retro cafeteria tucked away in Umm Ghuwailina, adjacent to the Ras Abu Aboud flyover. With an ambiance redolent of UK kitsch, it offers up an array of hearty British comfort foods such as steak and kidney pies, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and an all-day breakfast. But it’s their extensive sandwich menu that draws us in hook, line, and sinker. Hefty and hearty, each slice is a fistful. And with names like ‘Reggie the Veggie’, and ‘Tikka Your Fancy’ you can see why we keep coming back. The menu changes daily so the offerings are always new, and the price-point is right. Expect to shell out QR 22-QR 28 for your order.

This Gate Mall eatery offers up classic Lebanese fare (think a dozen varieties of manakeesh), fresh salads, and a list a mile long of Oriental and Western-style sandwiches and shawarmas. We love their Philly Cheese Steak, toasted, with extra cheese, while their BBQ Shish Taouk sammie is delectably filling – be sure to ask for one of their French Fries Boxes on the side! And while it’s not technically a sandwich, (but it is between two buns so we think that counts!) they do a mean Frankfurter hot dog! Pile on all the toppings – relish, mustard, onions, mayo and more and you’ve got a hand-held masterpiece that you can savour every bite! A sandwich here will run you between QR 20-QR 36.

This gorgeously airy café at the Crowne Plaza Doha – The Business Park is reason enough to make the drive to Airport Road! (And no, we’d never call ourselves jealous of those of you lucky to live within striking distance of this delicious spot!) With a pipe-and-beam industrial interior and splashes of vibrant colour throughout, Meesh Café’s is an all-round treat for foodies. So much more than just a coffee shop, (though the java rocks!) you’ll find a fresh selection of salads, savoury pastries, and breakfast options – but we’re here for the selection of wraps, bagels, ciabattas and baguettes, all synonyms for sandwich! We’re a sucker for their classic smoked salmon on cream cheese bagel, toasted, with creamy slices of avocado. We also have a feeling you’ll love Meesh’s signature sarnie – their packs-a-punch Peri-Peri chicken with sautéed bell peppers, Emmental cheese, and shredded carrot. Meesh Café? We say Ajeeb Café! Sandwich prices start from QR 26-45

Our list wouldn’t be complete without a nod to Australia’s most famous grocer – Jones. With two locations in Qatar – one in the Gate Mall and the newest branch on The Pearl-Qatar, it’s an ideal spot for a solo working lunch or a slow, weekend catch-up with friends. The offerings are fresh, wholesome, and healthful with top-notch, in-season ingredients. Take a peek at the Another One Bites The Crust section of the menu and you’ll find some inspired sandwich creations! Their Roast Chicken and Avocado, and Turkey, Brie and Cranberry Baguette are comfort food at its finest, while their Hoisin Duck Wrap and Spiced Lamb Flatbread are flavoursome varieties for those seeking more global fare! Indulge and enjoy, but expect the bill to come to between QR 32-QR 44 depending on the sandwich.
