Perched on the 24th floor of the glamorous and mesmerising Banyan Tree is its signature Thai restaurant, Saffron Doha. Saffron Doha offers its guests an authentic gastronomic experience with beautiful Thai decor and views of the city.
The ILoveQatar.net (ILQ) team had the opportunity to visit this lavish gourmet Thai restaurant to experience its opulence and enjoy the exotic recipes by Chef Porntip Eumanan who knows how to create a perfect meal!
Saffron Doha has a friendly vibe and as soon as we entered this lavish fine dining restaurant, the Master Chef and the rest of the staff welcomed us warmly and showed us to our seats. We were treated like royalty and all our needs were well taken care of.
The Amuse Bouche served was a great way to start the meal. The flavours of the Miang Kham were unique and exotic. Served on a betel leaf topped with ginger, bird’s eye chilli peppers, limes, roasted peanuts, shallots, toasted coconut, and tiny dried shrimps, the idea is to pick it up in a single swoop of the hand. The fried wonton is crunchy on the outside and soft in the centre. Both are served with a tangy mango and chilli dip.
The Khong Wang Ruam is a set of appetisers that's good for two people. It includes rice-noodle wrapped prawns, grilled chicken satay, sea bass noodle rolls, pomelo prawn salad and three dips you won't be able to get enough of.
Each item in this set has its very own distinct flavour. You've probably never eaten anything like them and you'll love them all. Last, but not least, is the Yum Pla Salmon which is a salmon salad that tastes as fresh as it looks and comes with a spicy citrus dressing that goes well with it.
The staff knows the menu inside out so if you feel you can't decide what to try, they will guide you and tell you what are the must have's. Be sure to try their hearty and delightful soups - Tom Yum Goong (traditional spicy prawn soup flavoured with lemongrass and galangal) and Tom Kha Gai (which has galangal-coconut broth, chicken, coriander and kaffir lime leaves).
The appetisers will have you craving for more. So, let's bring in the mains. The presentation of each main is a visual treat and bursting with colours that will tickle your taste buds.
Some of the mains recommended by the Master Chef are the Phad Kaprao Nua which is a Thai Basil Beef Stir-Fry, Goong Thod Nahm Pla Waan which is prawns in a tangy, sweet and sour tamarind sauce, and the Gai Phad Med Mamaung Himmapharn which is a delicious and aromatic crunchy Thai cashew chicken served with four types of rice.
Each dish is a creation of love and you can feel it with each bite.
A Thai meal wouldn't be complete without having their Khao Niew Mamuang & I-Time Kati which is their mango sticky rice and this one's served with a creamy, subtle coconut ice cream that goes exceptionally well with the rest of the dessert.
