When you think of dining at a five-star hotel, you’d probably imagine a lavish and extravagant set-up with opulent decor and an exquisite setting - verging on being slightly excessive. For most people, Ramadan is a month where modesty and moderation are among the forefront values that are commonly practiced, and where culture and tradition is embraced.

Doha isn’t short of dining options for Iftar or Suhoor. There are various Ramadan tents arranged by the city’s multitude of hotels, as well as smaller and homely restaurants that have their own special deals and offers during the Holy Month. If you’re looking for a place that strikes a balance between providing a resplendent dining experience and upholding a true sense of culture, The Ritz-Carlton, Doha is the perfect choice. ILQ had the pleasure of being invited to sample some of the most delectable and diverse cuisine selection that a luxury hotel could offer.

The Al Wosail Tent at The Ritz-Carlton, Doha actually takes you on a retrospective journey to an early-day Qatar. When entering the tent, it feels as if you’ve just entered a traditional Bedouin camping site, with Arabesque-patterned canopies lining the walls where the food is set, and a typical majlis where one can sit and enjoy a nice piping hot cup of Arabic coffee or tea.

An even more spectacular site is the Al Wosail ballroom where visitors are seated to enjoy the unique and cultural culinary experience that the Al Wosail Tent has to offer. The ballroom is made to appear as if it’s the popular Qatari historic site, the Al Zubarah Fort. The room’s interior is furnished with similar Arabesque patterns on the chairs and tables, and the walls - which now look like fort walls, timeworn and beaten - have dedicated spaces to appear as if visitors are sitting in an open-air environment, with backdrops of a beautiful, dark starry night. The ambiance couldn’t be more perfect; hues of vibrant red and gold emanate from the ballroom and give off a stunning glow and complement the dark blue of the night sky.

For entertainment, Whirling Dervishes perform on-stage captivating guests with their mesmerizing spinning, while Arabic coffee servers walk around the ballroom welcoming visitors with their warm hospitality.

The buffet spread is very impressive with both local and international cuisines readily available to satiate the hungry palate. In addition to the salads, hot buffet options, and dessert section, the Al Wosail Tent also has various live cooking stations where chefs can be seen preparing special custom requests from guests.

A wide selection of Arabic dishes can be found at the Al Wosail Tent. From local favorites such as flavorful chicken machboos and lamb ouzi, to more regional dishes like chicken shawarma -- straight off the spit -- shish taouk, lamb kebabs, and koftas from different types of meat! One of our favorites from the Arabic cuisine was actually a Turkish dish. It was a fried flatbread with a juicy meat and zesty labneh filling. This one is a must-try!

While the tent offers a wide selection of local and cultural dishes, there’s also a number of international items that you can try if you want to explore your options. You can find traditional Western roast beef and roast turkey, served with sides of mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. Succulent and juicy, these dishes definitely satiate the appetite. But we still had room for more.

South American

Spice up your palate with a taste of South America. Tacos, guacamole, salsa, enchiladas, and more of your South American favorites can also be found at the Al Wosail Tent’s South American station. The enchiladas are melt-in-your-mouth delicious - literally - they’re cheesy and perfectly seasoned. It was one of the Al Wosail Tent’s most noteworthy dishes from their South American selection.

The Al Wosail Tent also has a live sushi station where they serve different types of sushi: maki, nigiri, and even sashimi. The sushi is freshly made and expertly crafted by the chefs at the live station. Some notable rolls include their fried maki and mushroom-topped maki. In addition to sushi, you can find other flavor-filled dishes such as Kung Pao chicken and Singaporean noodles. Their sushi is definitely a must. Indian

Experience the Indian subcontinent through a number of aromatic dishes that will light up your senses. Staying true to authentic Indian cuisine, the chefs at the Ritz-Carlton, Doha incorporate a complementary blend of spices and herbs to add zest and spark to the food. With dishes such as tandoori chicken, daal makhni, butter chicken, and a pani puri that’s to die for, the food from this particular cuisine surpasses all expectations of quality and taste.

To add the literal cherry on top of the cake, conclude your culinary experience by choosing from an assortment of Indian, Arabic, and French pastries. With desserts such as gulab jamun, Baklava, and even a live Turkish ice-cream cart -- where instead of playing with your food, the food plays with you -- there are plenty of choices to give you a much needed sugar rush.

The momentous occasion of Ramadan only comes once a year, and with it an opportunity to experience special moments of joy with your loved ones. Join the Ritz-Carlton Doha at their Al Wosail Tent to enjoy a delicious Iftar or Suhoor with your family while diving headfirst into the authenticity of Qatari culture.
