As expats, celebrating the festive season away from home comes with its own set of challenges and unique, brand-new traditions. While we miss and crave that taste of home, (because we all know Mom makes it best!), we learn to keep those flavours, traditions, and celebrations alive in our way over the holiday season here in Qatar.

Some of us love to cook – no doubt! And a full day spent in the kitchen is how we oftentimes show our love for those friends who have become family among our Doha nearest and dearest. But for those of us who aren’t adept in an apron, or who would rather spend more time socializing than roasting and basting, Jones the Grocer should be on your Christmas speed-dial!

Offering up one of the most authentic, taste-of-home, Take-Away Turkeys for those of us who are spending the holidays here in Qatar, their limited edition seasonal feast with all the trimmings is comfort on a platter.

The ILQ team recently ordered up one to share between us in an early celebration of the season, and there wasn’t a plate in the house that wasn’t left clean! Rich, moist, and with the perfect amount of crackling skin, the turkey was large enough to feed 10 hungry people and came adorned with an array of piping hot, fragrant side dishes with enough variety that there was at least one person’s favourite for each! (Juicy roast sausages wrapped in beef bacon with roasted red onions anyone??)

Golden, duck fat roasted potatoes offered additional fodder to soak up the richly savoury juniper berry-infused gravy – clamouring only for top spot for peak pairing with the sage and apricot stuffing. And, because when you’re having that much comfort food you need a little zing to make your mouth pucker…enter the tart perfection of their cranberry sauce like Grandma used to make – nothing out of a can here!

The Takeaway Turkey also comes with sides of wholesome and moreish honey-glazed parsnips and carrots – enough to make even the most finicky festive picker eat their veggies! These lay side-by-side with a heaping helping of sautéed Brussels sprouts and chestnuts, and that Yuletide favourite – staple of roast dinners around the world…broccoli and cauliflower with cheese.Warming our bellies and, okay yes, our hearts – it IS the festive season after all – it was a meal to remember fondly. And, really – isn’t that the whole point of the holidays? The memories we make and the people who make them with us?
