When the weekend comes around, what is it that we’re most looking forward to? A break from the routine of the past week and good food (at least, that’s what I want!). The name that pops up in my mind when I think about unwinding and delicious food is Teatro at the City Centre Rotana Doha.

Teatro is one of City Centre Rotana Doha’s most loved restaurant’s and I’m not surprised. The food there is amazing. With their concept of ‘Where eastern cooking meets western cuisine’, this award winning restaurant offers fusion cuisine that creatively blends Chinese, Indian, Italian, Japanese and Thai cuisines together and the results are phenomenal.

That’s why, when the opportunity to try out their new dining concept arose, I jumped at the offer. This time round, Teatro has introduced the concept of a Thai Curry Night, better know as Chanchai’s Thai Curry Night on Fridays from 7 pm to 11 pm.

Teatro’s very own chef Chanchai has chosen his favourite Thai curries and served them up as a set menu for QR 85 per person.

What are Chef Chanchai’s favourite Thai curries?

Chef Chanchai has put together his five most loved Thai curries to showcase the versatility of different That curries - from fish to vegetable based; from duck meat to prawns – each individual curry emphasises the diversity of Thai cuisine and encaptures the unique and exquisite flavours that make Thai cuisine so special and loved around the world. Each curry is bursting with fresh and authentic Thai ingredients, vegetables, meat, poultry and sea food, and each one has its very own unique taste.

These curries are:

  1. Kaeng kiew wann kai (green chicken curry with coconut milk and basil)
  2. Kaeng phed ped yang (roasted duck curry with lychee and cherry tomato)
  3. Kaeng phanaeng neua (creamy beef penang curry with crushed peanut, baby eggplant and kaffir lime leaves)
  4. Kaeng mussaman (lamb massaman curry with peanut, potato and onion)
  5. Kaeng som goong mala ko (prawn sour curry with green papaya)

What to expect at Chanchai's Thai Curry Night?

Now, let’s talk about the set menu itself and what it’s made up of?

Act 1 is the starter - Amuse Bouche (Thai spicy chicken minced salad): This well-balanced starter is the perfect way to start the meal. The portion size is just perfect and the flavours of the chicken mince and lemon with a subtle hint of red chili is phenomenal!

Act 2 consists of the five curries we talked about above: The portion size of each curry is just right; each one tastes completely different from the next, and ranges between, salty, sour, sweet and spicy.

My personal favourites were the

  1. Kaeng kiew wann kai (green chicken curry with coconut milk and basil) – if you’re looking for something that’s traditionally Thai, then this is perfect. The flavours are delicate, the chicken is soft and juicy, the curry is exquisite with just the right blend of spices to give you that kick!
  2. Kaeng phed ped yang (roasted duck curry with lychee and cherry tomato) – this was a new flavor to me, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed; the sweetness of the lychees and cherry tomatoes added that extra zing to this exquisite curry; the duck was roasted to perfection, and the lychees in the curry were delicious.
  3. Kaeng phanaeng neua (creamy beef penang curry with crushed peanut, baby eggplant and kaffir lime leaves) – the beef in this curry was soft and succulent and the curry itself was flavoursome with the kaffir lime leaves and other additions provided the dish versatility.

That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the other curries. Let’s talk about those here:

  1. Kaeng mussaman (lamb massaman curry with peanut, potato and onion) – this robust massaman curry has a depth of flavour with each ingredient perfectly balancing the other to create a dish that’s promising and a delight to eat.
  2. Kaeng som goong mala ko (prawn sour curry with green papaya) – the base of this curry is fish sauce and it’s a sour one. I liked this one, too, because it was completely different from the other curries, and more exotic and intense in flavour; the consistency was more soupy, than the others though.

The steamed jasmine rice that comes with the curries perfectly complements the different flavours.

Act 3 is the dessert – Gelato coconut: This extraordinarily simple, yet mouthwatering dessert, was a delicacy in itself. The coconut ice cream served with a biscotti and a sliver of white chocolate was subtle and yet bursting with flavor. What a perfect way to end the evening!
