[UPDATED] State of Qatar prohibits all forms of social gatherings

[UPDATE] as on 22 March 2020, 12:07 am: The Ministry of Interior tweeted saying that their comment “any vehicle with more than one person will be stopped and asked” was incorrect. The Ministry of the Interior affirms that the prohibition does not include transportation by cars, buses or trucks as long as it is for a necessary purpose.

H.E. Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani issued Saturday a decision imposing precautionary measures to prevent all forms of gathering, by the power of law, including but not limited to Corniche; public parks and beaches; and social gatherings, in continuation of the efforts exerted by the State to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19), which is widespread in the world, and to curb its spread among citizens and residents in the country.

H.E. Spokesperson of the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohammed Al Khater said at a press conference held on 21 March 2020, that the following has been decided:

    • Mobile patrols will be deployed throughout the country and all violators will be arrested.
    • Patrol units will start patrolling from tonight.
    • There will also be special checkpoints set up in common areas.
    • The checkpoints are set to push people to stay home.
    • Food outlets and pharmacies will operate normally, as well as catering services.
    • If you find anybody violating the rules, you can report them HERE!
    • No curfew has been announced.
    • Please do not trust rumours.

Her Excellency also reiterated that the State of Qatar, with all its relevant organs and bodies, is doing everything it can to preserve the safety of society and to contain the virus without human losses, stressing that individual responsibility and societal sense must prevail among being a decisive factor.
