The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) will open on Tuesday the field hospital in the Industrial Area, which will be dedicated to receiving all patients through the emergency department, outpatient clinics, and short stay with a section to allocated to receiving the coronavirus (COVID-19) suspected cases.
The field hospital run by the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) will start providing its services to the residents of the Industrial Area as of Tuesday after completing its construction in less than four weeks.
The hospital will contribute to national efforts to tackle and limit the spread of the COVID-19 while providing reception and examination services for suspected cases.
In remarks to reporters after a tour for the media personnel in the hospital, Emergency Medicine Consultant at HMC Dr. Khalid Abdulnoor said that the field hospital was built on 5,000 square meters and it is not only dedicated to receiving COVID-19 suspected cases but also receives all emergencies, short stay, and outpatient clinics.
He explained that part of the hospital was allocated to receive COVID-19 suspected cases after the case passed on the emergency department and evaluated, where a smear is taken of the suspected case and the sample is sent to the HMC laboratories.
He added that the suspected case is kept in the COVID unit specialized for these cases with a 90-bed capacity in the field hospital until the results of the examination appear within 12 to 24 hours.
Dr. Abdulnoor pointed out that the confirmed COVID-19 cases are transferred to the health isolation facilities at the field hospital, which has two isolation facilities inside the Industrial Area, which can accommodate about 1,000 beds.
Moreover, Dr. Khalid Abdulnoor talked about the capabilities and other services provided by the field hospital for the residents of the Industrial Area, as it provides emergency services with a capacity of between 1,000 to 3,000 cases per day while providing short-term service for simple and medium cases as well as the outpatient service in major specialties such as the internal, teeth, nose, ear, throat, diabetes and follow-up fractures.
He explained that the hospital also includes a radiology room, as well as the possibility of performing minor surgeries under local anesthesia for cases of wounds or fractures.
Dr. Abdulnoor stated that the emergency department has a 30-bed capacity with the possibility of increasing it, while the short stay has a 70-bed capacity, explaining that the short stay department enables the patient to stay in it for up to 12 to 24 hours, while cases that need intensive care are transferred to other HMC hospitals via the ambulance service.
He stressed that the COVID-19 pandemic was a health epidemic, but it presented new opportunities to better provide health care services in the Industrial Area, which will contribute to reducing the burden on other hospitals while providing high-quality medical services very close to the area's residents.
Dr. Abdulnoor expected that 90 percent of the cases that will go to the field hospital need neither intensive care nor surgery, but rather simple and medium-level care.
In his reply to a question about the possibility of the hospital to continue to provide its services even after the end of the COVID-19 crisis, he made it clear that there will be a study to develop services and move the hospital from a field to a permanent hospital but with basic services only provided as needed.
The medical director of the field hospital in the Industrial Area and HMC's Emergency Medicine Consultant Dr. Rahma Salim said the hospital receives both critical and normal cases, in addition to providing diagnostic services for suspected cases of coronavirus.
In a statement to reporters, she indicated that the hospital can conduct about 500 tests daily for COVID-19 suspected cases, noting that the Industrial Area's field hospital does not receive cases previously diagnosed with the coronavirus, but only cases suspected of being infected.
