April 9, 2020

In a press conference on April 9, 2020, held by H.E. Lolwah Al Khater, the Official Spokesperson of the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management it was announced that a new app called "EHTERAZ", meaning "precaution" will be launched SOON for smartphones. The precautionary application that helps us limit the spread of Coronavirus is a result of the joint efforts of the state's agencies, headed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Ministry of Public Health.

EHTERAZ is an application for smartphones that uses a GPS feature and Bluetooth to perform various services, and it aims to:

1. Enhance preventive measures and to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the State of Qatar

2. Display the latest developments and official statistics related to the coronavirus

3. Receive awareness and precautionary instructions issued by the official authorities

One of the features of the application is indicating a person's health status. The profile of each user is linked to the QR code by automatically extracting the user's health information from the official bodies according to the following categorizations:

There will be four colors representing your status:

  • Green: healthy individuals that do not exhibit any symptoms, or that have tested negative
  • Grey: suspected cases, individuals that exhibit symptoms, or that have been in contact with COVID-19 positive cases but have not been tested
  • Yellow: people who are in quarantine
  • Red: people that have been tested and had tested positive for COVID-19

If someone has had coronavirus (previously Red), then has recovered, their color will go back to grey until they are retested again and if negative, will change to green.

The application assists in identifying disease transmission chains, alerting individuals, and stakeholders to expedite the provision of medical support and prioritizing testing, according to H.E. Lolwa Al-Khater during the press conference.

H.E. Al Khater pointed out that all of this information is connected to a database and if a case of coronavirus infection is discovered, the application enables the competent authorities to track the areas where this person was present since downloading the application until the moment of infection and thus all people or a large percentage of the people who mix with them can be known as long they are using the same application. After identifying these people, they will receive messages through the application that they may have had contact with an infected person and will have priority in the testing, she added.

She stressed the importance of downloading and activating the application for the benefit of everyone, noting that in the event a person recovers from the virus, the application returns to the gray color where a specific period is put to check again to make sure of the full recovery and then the color of the application will be green, underscoring that the application maintains the privacy of everyone and only the health authorities can see the details of each person.

H.E. Al Khater pointed out that the application also helps at the quarantine to alert individuals if they are approaching a distance closer to the safe distance, by alerting them that they approached a distance that is not allowed even within the quarantine itself, stressing that if the application is used properly, it will pay off for the society as a whole through containment the spread the virus as much as possible.
