A special press conference was held Thursday evening by the Ministry of Public Health to discuss the latest developments and statistics related to Coronavirus (COVID-19). Here are the updates from Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani - Director of the Public Health Department.

COVID-19 statistics

  • Registering more than 86 thousand cases of recovery from nearly 100,000 injuries is an exceptional achievement in addition to maintaining one of the lowest death rates in the world with a total of 118 deaths so far
  • Over the past weeks, we have seen a drop in the number of cases reported daily as well as a drop in the number of patients admitted to hospital and Intensive Care Units
  • We are seeing signs of overcoming the peak stage of the pandemic and this is why we are starting to gradually and very cautiously lift restrictions imposed to control the spread of the virus

Gradual lifting of restrictions

  • We started to lift restrictions gradually and with great caution to control the spread of the virus and the continuation of precautionary measures
  • We count on everyone's commitment to precautionary measures to control the epidemic and return to normal life
  • MoPH urges to reduce social visits, including family visits as much as possible
  • Lifting the restrictions is based on a set of indicators whose outcome is essential to continuing to raise the next stages. In the event that one of the indicators is affected, some restrictions can be re-imposed or delaying the start of the following stages.
  • The second phase is the actual first phase after people come into contact in the complexes and markets, and we recommend the need to maintain social distancing so that the coronavirus does not spread between customers.

Guidelines for gradual opening

  • The Ministry of Public Health, in cooperation with ministries and government agencies, has published a set of guidelines on preventive measures and guidance on best practices to ensure safe gradual lifting of restrictions and the implementation of effective measures to protect society
  • There are a number of standard general precautions which should be followed by all and these include keeping 1.5 meters minimum distance between people, downloading the Ehteraz app, wearing masks, regular handwashing, and/or sanitizing, in addition to advising vulnerable groups (people over 60 years, pregnant women, and those suffering from chronic diseases) to remain at home.
  • The Ministry of Public Health has also identified a number of precautions for each of the restrictions lifted. These special precautions can be found on the website of the Ministry
  • We recommend not to travel at this time, and any traveler should familiarize themselves with the rules of quarantine in the country of arrival before traveling and adhere to the quarantine requirements
  • Our success in the second stage of the gradual opening is the guarantor of safe passage to the third and fourth stages
  • We offer special appreciation to all workers on the front lines in fighting the Corona epidemic, and we also pay tribute to the high directives of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the country, to fight the epidemic in the country

The Ministry of Public Health thanks all members of the community for their active role and their cooperation in implementing preventive measures, which helped in overcoming the height of the epidemic, and the start of lifting the restrictions imposed.
