A press conference was held on 10 March 2021 by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) to announce the latest developments related to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the State of Qatar.

New variant (UK strain) now in Qatar

Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal mentioned that Qatar's strict quarantine policy for returning travellers enabled to delay the introduction of new variants into the country for several months but are now seeing positive COVID-19 cases in the region and in Qatar with the new variant known as B.1.1.7 (UK strain). He also said that this new variant is much more contagious and spreads more easily between people.

He added that the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines being used in Qatar's vaccination program are effective against the new variants. More than 380,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered since the start of the COVID-19 vaccination program with more than 15,000 a day at present and no serious effects have been reported.

Cases go up by four times from January

Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal, Chair of the National Health Strategic Group on COVID-19 and Head of Infectious Diseases at Hamad Medical Corporation said, “We continue to see a significant number of new cases each day with many requiring admissions to hospitals to manage their symptoms and even admissions into ICU for life-saving treatment.“
