About WED

THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Since its inception in 1972, the World Environment Day celebration has moved individuals, communities and countries to give a human face to environmental issues and enable people to realize not only their responsibility but also their power to become the change they want to see in support of sustainable and equitable development. WED 2010 is set to be the biggest, most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action, the world over. This is the time for advocating partnerships and cooperation among all species living on this one planet and sharing a common future.

THE THEME

This is one timely message focusing on the central importance of the globe's wealth of species and ecosystems to humanity. The WED theme also supports this year's United Nations International Year of Biodiversity. Hosting this year's celebration is Rwanda, an East African country that is in transition to a truly Green Economy. The country faces many challenges ranging from overcoming poverty and developing sustainable energy resources to land degradation, this "land of a thousand hills" is developing forward-looking strategies including the development of renewable energies including hydropower, solar power, biogas and methane gas for power generation. Rwanda now stands as a beacon of hope as they pioneer a ban on plastic bags, nationwide environmental clean-up campaigns and the restoration of previously degraded natural rainforest as part of a chimpanzee conservation program.

CELEBRATIONS IN QATAR (WED in Qatar)

Initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Qatar looks forward to another exciting celebration of the World Environment Day 2010 under the auspices of Dr. Saif Ali Al Hajari, through the pioneering efforts of the International Academy for Intercultural Development (IAID) In association with Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC) and UNESCO-Qatar. The World Environment Day annual celebration is now more than just an event for the Academy. It is an important advocacy that we share with the rest of humanity. This year marks the Academy's fourth (4th) year of pioneering this event with participants and results that increasingly grows in support and participation every year. With the inspiration of UNEP and the continued support of our growing partners in education and cultural development, this is one significant event that truly unites us in our diversity through dance, music and the arts.
