Every week ILQ features a different Qatari startup in a segment called ‘Startup of the Week’. Qatar has some of the most creative, unique, and impactful startups in the region. We cover different startups across various industries in Doha, from fashion and beauty to food and dining, to health and education, and more! This week we’re featuring a local digital startup called Thaqafa!

Thaqafa aims to enrich Arabic audio content by producing podcasts and audiobooks. This startup specializes in history, Arabic poetry, and short novels as these subjects are some of the most popular among listeners in the region.

This unique startup was founded by four engineers Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, Abdulaziz Anani, Abdullah Taha, and Kareem Kotb.

“We are a team of 4 engineers and we have similar backgrounds in terms of education and objectives. We usually have to drive for long periods and we were trying to find good Arabic audio content to listen to while driving,” said the Thaqafa team. “Unfortunately (or fortunately), we didn't find something consistent in terms of quality or longevity. Therefore, we decided to make it ourselves and applied to QBIC to support us.”

Thaqafa also has a sample podcast that’s now available on its website, more podcasts will be available soon. So far they have 332 subscribers to their website and more than 90 followers on Facebook, Instagram and twitter. Thaqafa also had the opportunity to present itself at the Qatar Social event that took place on July 21, 2017.

“We aim to become the largest podcast producer in the middle east and to host the largest Arabic audio library.”
