HH The Emir visits Southeast Asia

HH The Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani went on a two-day trip to Malaysia to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. He also visited Singapore as a part of this tour, where his arrival marked Qatar’s first-ever state visit to the country. Qatar has strong economic and diplomatic ties with both nations, and His Highness’s diplomatic tour reaffirmed these bonds during a time of crisis in the GCC. HH Sheikh Tamim was accompanied by a delegation of senior officials and business delegates from Qatar.

Qatar re-elected for 2018-2020 UN Human Rights Council

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has re-elected Qatar to be a part of the UN Human Rights council for the fourth time. This re-election shows the confidence of UNGA towards Qatar’s efforts in the  protection of human rights in conflict zones both regionally and internationally. Amidst the GCC crisis, this news has stirred a lot of conversation among the international community as Qatar defends itself against false allegations of supporting global terrorism bythe blockading states.

Attack on Mogadishu

With the death toll still rising, 300 people thus far have been reported to have perished in the bombing in central Mogadishu, Somalia last Saturday, October 14, 2017, as the explosion tore through one of the busiest parts of the city. The attack is being blamed on Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab, and is the worst terrorist attack in Somalia’s history. The international community, including Qatar, has condemned the attack, pouring in support and aid for Somalia and those families who have lost loved ones in the blast.

Qatar enters the Enterprise Europe Network

Qatar became the first GCC country to be accepted into the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN). This is a big step forward for Qatar’s economy -- especially in the wake of the Saudi-led bloc’s trade embargo against Qatar. The EEN is an initiative of the European Commission to support small- and medium-sized enterprises with ambitions for business expansion in the European Union, with the involvement of the international community.

Was it a meteor, or not?

On Monday, October 16, residents in Qatar spotted a meteor-like object in the skies over Doha and, of course, Twitter went crazy documenting it! Social media was flooded with pictures and videos of the ‘unidentified’ falling object. There was some speculation on what the object exactly was, with most people jumping to the conclusion that it was a meteor. However, the following day, the Qatar Astronomical Center confirmed in a Tweet that it wasn’t a meteor after all -- rather it was a Russian SL-4 rocket-body re-entering the atmosphere.
