Over the past week, news has been circulating from a fake version of a Swiss news website The Local, reporting that Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Mauritania the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have collectively written to FIFA asking to reconsider and remove Qatar as the hosts of FIFA 2022. The article implied that these countries demanded that Qatar should be stripped of the honour of hosting the 2022 World Cup on the basis of their accusations of Qatar supporting terrorism. This information is not true.

The report, sourced from the fake version of The Local, included quotes purporting to be from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Reportedly, Infantino expects the situation to return to normal in time for the for the tournament. According to Al Jazeera, he mentions, "Obviously, if football can offer a small contribution to improve the situation, I won't hesitate to offer my help," also adding that FIFA will stay clear of any and all kind of “geopolitics”.

Qatar will be hosting the World Cup in the winter of 2022, and is scheduled to host several events across different sports in the lead-up to the tournament.
