DTFF aims to promote new generation of film-makers

The people behind the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF), which was launched yesterday with pomp and pageantry, said they are looking into creating a platform that will help young film-makers and an emerging generation of filmmakers a place to showcase their work.

Geoff Gilmore, Tribeca Enterprises Chief Creative Officer, said it is their aim to represent the new generation of film-makers and help develop the film industry here, as well as help develop the film culture and see how it will evolve in the next several years.

“We want to change the style of storytelling here… There are westerners who do not have a very developed vision of this side of the world and we would like to have that vision become more sophisticated and the way to do that is to tell stories because film is such a good window into other people’s cultures,” said Gilmore during the opening night of the DTFF.

Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) in New York, said they will be announcing education initiatives here. Rosenthal said it is also their aim to showcase Qatari films at the TFF someday.

Rosenthal co-founded the TFF in New York with celebrated actor Robert de Niro and Craig Hatkoff. The DTFF, which is the brainchild of H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, is a partnership between the Qatar Museums Authority and Tribeca Enterprises in New York.

Around 5,000 people flocked to the Museum of Islamic Art yesterday to watch the opening film Amelia by Mira Nair.

Nair, film director, writer and producer, said she admires the ideals of DTFF as it not only showcases cinema, it also teaches it.

“The Doha Tribeca Film Festival is devoted to cinema but also to the community – to educate people in this part of the world to make their own cinema.”
