Could Toro Toro be the best of the brunch?

This weekend Toro Toro, Marsa Malaz Kempinski opened its doors to delight us with a whole new brunch experience. This cleverly conceived concept from celebrity chef, Richard Sandoval, delivers a relaxed yet lively Latin experience.

The relaxing part about brunch at Toro Toro is that everything is brought to your table: there’s no big table laden with items that sometimes aren’t labeled; there’s no surveying the room to identify what food is going to make its way on to your plate; there’s no interrupting the flow of conversation; or the temptation to pile your plate high.

That’s not to say you won’t feel like you’ve indulged; there certainly is a feast on offer. It’s just that the cards are in your hands as how much food comes by your table – just play the green or red card to stop and restart whenever you feel the need for more.

Before the arrival of the main event, the Churrascaira style barbequed meats, comes a selection a small plates that are piled high with flavour. The salads are well seasoned. The slighty spicy guacamole is the perfect dip for those addictive tortilla chips. The seared tuna has us ordering more (you can ask for a repeat of any dish you like). We were also introduced to cachapas, which are corn pancakes filled with melted cheese and served with a sweet tomato jam.

Our cards still on the good-to-go green gave our Passadores (the meat servers) the signal that we were ready to take on the meat feast.

They were kept busy carving us freshly cooked cuts of meat including tasty rib eye, prime rib, beef flank, lamb neck, shrimp, and to help you digest it all, the cinnamon sugar coated pineapple that smells and tastes divine.

Dessert here was also something of a surprise, where the idea of quality over quantity continued to be executed. While most Friday brunches offer a deluge of desserts, here the desert board is modest and perfectly formed. Crisp mini churros are here for dipping into that delicious dark chocolate; a tres leches cake which didn't look particularly inspiring surprises us with its sweet and subtle flavour and is paired with a crunch nut crumb and coffee cream. There’s also a little pot of crème caramel mousse topped with crunchy salted caramel. 

 The good food, relaxing sea view, uptempo Latin music and friendly staff ensures that brunch at Toro Toro adds up to a very enjoyable experience. Obrigado to the team.
