30 new projects to turn Qatar green

The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning is planning to implement 30 new projects throughout the country next year to turn Qatar green.

The project aims to plant trees and develop green areas across the country. The plan is to increase green space ranging from 20 to 25 square meters per person which is considered an ideal standard, according to Khalid Al Sanadi, Project Manager of Public Parks Department at the Ministry.

Addressing a workshop on beautification of the GCC cities held here on Monday, Al Sanadi said some new guidelines and specifications for buildings would be announced soon to promote green areas.

The public parks projects which have been completed and those that are being implemented and expected to complete by the first quarter of 2012 soared to 38 projects worth QR331m. The coming projects will meet the GCC and world standards, said the official.

A two day workshop on the role of municipalities to modernize the cities of GCC states was attended directors of the municipalities and representatives from public parks departments from GCC countries.

The workshop aimed to prepare an agenda for joint GCC strategy for development and beautification of GCC cities. Challenges faced by the modern cities and mechanisms based on science and technology to upgrade the cities were discussed at the workshop. Citing some ongoing development projects in Doha and its outskirts, director of Doha Municipality, Mohammad Ahmad Al Sayed said that Qatar was seriously working to upgrade its cities and towns.
