InterContinental® Doha The City will be launching its Pink October activities with the aim of raising awareness of Breast Cancer, informing about the importance of early detection, and the different initiatives and programmes available in the country dedicated to this cause.

A lavish pink afternoon tea party was held at The Bridge, InterContinental® Doha The City, on the 27th of September to kick off the activities. Media, bloggers, and influencers gathered around to taste the savoury items and sweet treats presented as a preview of the Pink Afternoon Tea that will be served during the month of October at the hotel’s Lobby Lounge.

This initiative was held in partnership with The National Breast and Bowel Cancer Screening Program “Screen For Life” led by The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC). The “Screen For Life” outreach program team held a presentation about the importance of early detection through screening, delivering an overview of the screening services that the program is providing to the community in addition to the program’s latest achievement.

“Our goal at ‘Screen For Life’ is to raise cancer awareness levels across Qatar and drive home the important message that early detection in the fight against cancer and screening plays a major role in saving lives,” said Dr. Shaikha Abu Shaikha, Cancer Program Manager at PHCC. “In our screening pathway, we outline that the target age range for breast screening is women aged 45 and above and through constant awareness campaigns and outreach programs we urge women to undergo a mammogram, which is free of charge for all citizens and residents, by calling the program’s call center at 8001112.”

During the event, guests were also given the opportunity to tour the inside of the mobile screening unit that provides mammogram service

“Year on year, InterContinental Doha The City supports the fight against Breast Cancer Awareness with our annual campaign,” said James Young, General Manager. “We aim to raise awareness among our guests and colleagues about the importance of early detection and screening through our Pink themed activities and our collaboration with Screen For Life. Eligible hotel colleagues will also be taking advantage of the free screening program offered, and we will be holding a private presentation for all hotel team members in order to raise awareness internally as well.”

Together with the 'Screen For Life', InterContinental Doha The City aims to not only entertain the guests with unique promotions, but also educate them on the importance of early detection through screening.

Intercontinental® Doha The City is set to paint the town pink with its many activities, from Pink Afternoon Tea and unique pink treats at the Lobby Lounge, to an extravagant Pink Brunch at The Square on the 6th and 20th of October.

About Qatar's Breast and Bowel Screening Program:

The Breast and Bowel Screening Program is a life-saving, population-based initiative that aims to promote education, awareness and early detection of breast and bowel cancer in Qatar. Titled ‘Screen for Life’, it is being conducted under Qatar’s National Cancer Program and in accordance with the country’s National Health Strategy 2011-2016, which represents a shift towards preventive and community-based care. The National Cancer Strategy’s key recommendation 5.2 states the need for a population-based cancer screening program in Qatar.

The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), a provider of a wide range of primary healthcare services across the State of Qatar, has been given the authority to lead the program. To ensure its effective and efficient implementation, PHCC has tapped the expertise of an international consortium of companies: Fujifilm from Japan, which supplies medical equipment and information solutions; RadNet from the U.S., which performs clinical and operational services; and, Specialized Medical Solutions (SMS), which provides on-the-ground administrative support in Doha.

Now in its second year of operation, the ‘Screen for Life’ program has reached significant milestones and has so far screened around 16,000 people for breast and bowel cancer since Program’s launch, while highlighting the benefits of the early detection of cancer through screening and reminding people of the tests’ simple and fast process which can be performed in ultimate privacy.

Appointments can be made at the three specialized screening facilities located at Al Wakra Health Center, Lebaib Health Center and Rawdat Al Khail Health Center, which have been carefully designed and include spa-like features to put patients at ease during a screening appointment, with highly-trained staff on hand to take care of patient needs.

Members of the public can also book an appointment through the dedicated ‘Screen for Life’ call center, by calling 800 1112, with trained professionals ready to answer any enquires about the screening process and cancer-related questions.
