QATAR Petroleum (QP) has awarded the major design contract for the Qatar Petroleum residential complex project to Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM).
SOM is supported by international engineering firms Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (JE), and Shen, Milsom, Wilke (SMW).
The design work will be completed in two years and eventually lead to a construction completion in 2010.
The complex is to consolidate a majority of Qatar Petroleum’s Doha-based staff at one location, a QP release yesterday said.
The scope of the design work covers the entire spectrum of architectural and engineering services, commencing with master plan, concept, scheme design, detailed design, and finally construction management.
“The project aims to create a culturally inspired, state-of-the-art and environmentally responsive, world-class landmark design that will establish an integrated Qatar Petroleum presence within Doha,” the release added.
The project site is located on the northern outskirts of Doha and covers an area of 570,000sq m, within the Energy City of the new Lusail development project.
It will accommodate a centralised office building for almost 3,000 QP staff and will house a range of support facilities including a medical centre, corporate training facility, records centre and a recreation centre. Ample vehicle parking space will also be provided.
The complex will come up on a landscaped and environmentally friendly campus, which will be known as the “Qatar Petroleum Centre”.
